The Curfew is Lifted...Kind Of

September 25th 2009 8:45am

I´m not sure how often I will be able to keep updating every day from home. My computer hasn´t been the best worker recently, and I may have to let it go.

Yesterday, the curfew was lifted. We were all able to go to work and return to our daily activities. Work was...weird. A lot of people don´t see eye to eye on how things happened over the last few days, so there were some obvious tensions within the office.

I knew I had to finish a lot of work fast, so I worked on my lesson plan without focusing on much else during the morning. Around 12:00, Noemy called us into the conference room for a meeting. We discussed the week´s events and our responses to them. Then, I got lost in what we were talking about. I was very confused, and consequently frustrated.

I found out after the meeting that Marisela and Noemy were talking about a project that only the two of them were involved in. Freddy told me that Noemy has a tendency to invite the whole staff in for a meeting when she really only needs to talk with on person.

We didn´t eat lunch until 1:00, but a lunch of chicken and rice was a much welcomed change from two and a half straight days of cereal and peanut butter sandwiches. Lunch was pretty awesome for me, mainly because I understood a couple of the jokes that Edgardo told. They were cheesy and kind of dumb, but I have found so far that understanding jokes in another language has been one of the hardest things for me to understand.

Also, we had the news on, and I almost died laughing. I wasn´t sure tht I understood it at first, but they replayed the scene, and I had understood it correctly. The interviewer questioned three groups of protesters. The first group was protesting for Mel. The second group was protesting against Mel. The third group was the most intense. They were lighting tires on fire and rolling them down the street. They looked the scariest by far. When the interviewer asked thm what they were protesting...

"We hate the curfew! I don´t care who is in power, Micheletti, Mel...its boring at my house! I don´t want to stay inside!"

After lunch, I finished up work on my lesson plan and did the word of the day with everyone before riding back home with Freddy and Edgardo. On the ride home, Edgardo told me that he had gone out with the protesters. Not because he was Pro-Mel, so much as he was against the current government´s actions. I was fascinated, and really respected his willingness to go out.

I walked into my apartment, and immediately turned back around to head to the store to get some food. Plaza Miraflores was a mad house. I ended up only getting about 3 things, and it took me over an hour. I have never seen people so crazy trying to get food.

My evening was spent mostly infront of the television, enjoying a good Thursday night television line up. I tried wrestling with my computer for a little while, but it kept shutting off, so I resolved to stop messing with it, and go to sleep instead.
