I woke up around 8:00 this morning and got ready for my day with a bowl of cereal and a nice fresh Honduran banana. Thanks to Devin, I eat bananas now, so that is new. Rats off to you Devin.
By 9:00, I was in Freddy's car with his mom and sister on our way to church. We drove for at least 20 minutes into parts of the city that I hadn't been to yet. As we neared our destination, I was informed that the part of town that we were in was called "Downtown". I mean, I suppose the buildings in the area were a little bit taller, but I would never have called it a "Downtown" area.
We parked on the street right next to the church, and went in where we were just in time for Sunday School. I don't know if my church vocabulary is much better than the rest of my Spanish, or if it was because I was able to read along with what we were talking about, but I was able to understand most of the class. It started with about six of us, but by the end of class, there were over 20 young adults participating.
I knew that the churches here were more conservative, so it came as no surprise to me that today's Sunday School lesson was about how Jesus was an evangelist, and so we need to be evangelists to non-believers. I tried to suggest that our lives may be following in the example set by Christ, and that we can then lead by example by having our lives be testimonies of our faith. Apparently, that is a good first step, but its just not enough to convince the non-believers.
There are a lot of people from work who go to this church including Noemy, Elmer and his family, Luis Felipe, and Juaqin and his family. Sadat and his girlfriend also attend. It was nice to see a lot of familiar faces.
The service followed Sunday School, and was both shorter, and more upbeat than I thought it would be. There was a band that played songs, but I did not care for them very much. They were upbeat, but I'm pretty sure that each one of them talked about how Christ died for us. Some focused more on the blood of Christ than others. The sermon was decent, by which I mean I didn't find it too offensive, and I was happy to be out of the service within an hour.
Freddy then dropped me off at home, and went out to lunch with his family. I made myself a quick peanut butter sandwich and watched some good old American Football for a while. The Bengals game was not on, but I saw the highlights which included the very frustrating ending.
I took a nap for a while, but woke up with the pounding of the rain on the roof over my head. The rain lasted for only about 20 minutes, but it really poured. I thought about what Sadat had said yesterday, but he had said that the rainy season or the hurricane season was what really triggered the mudslides. One rain wouldn't really be enough to cause an entire mudslide.
I spent some time looking at things that I could do tomorrow and places that I could go around the city. Then I went up to the roof and worked out for a very little bit before coming back down and cooking some eggs and bacon for a breakfast for dinner. I'm getting pretty good at bacon and eggs if I do say so myself.
After dinner, I spend the next couple of hours working on wedding plans for Daniel and Maggie's wedding. I sent them an email, then looked up on of Jon Rumburg's online sermons for a little bit of my own church time. I have found that I really enjoy reading Rumburg's sermons, and have to resolve to only read them on Sundays so that I do not run out. Thank you Jon.
