Yesterday, I woke up a little early and had time to eat a good breakfast of pancakes before hitting the road and heading off to work. I was excited, not only because of the pancakes, but also because of my new work with trying to find new ways for groups to visit Honduras.
When we got to the office, Nancy, Elmer, Freddy, and Marisela had already left to go on a trip to the south, where they went to three or four different work sites, and ate lunch in Nicaragua. I was kind of jealous. The rest of us had a good, productive day at the office, and I was able to prepare a lot of work for when Marisela would come back.
Throughout the day, most of my co workers tried to convice me that it was indeed cold. I conceeded the point that it was indeed colder than it had been, but never would I call mid to upper 60 degree weather cold.
I also worked on a lesson plan for the class this Saturday, and had a very productive day over all. With half an hour left in the day, I had accomplished a few more things than I had originally set out to do, and Freddy called me into his office. He wanted to have a very serious talk with me about if I could beat him in the Super Smash Brothers video game that he had downloaded. It was a fun, and relaxing way to end a day of hard work.
On the ride home, Freddy told me that most of his friends were going out to celebrate one of their other friends´ birthday. I ate some dinner and read for a while before Sadoc picked me up and we headed to Applebee´s to meet everyone. Freddy, Dario, and Sadoc were the only people that I knew there, though I had met Raul and his girlfriend once before, while watching a Honduras game.
I sat next to a man known as Frosty, who was so called due to his bodily proportions resembling that of a snowman. Frosty liked to talk. A lot. We talked about music, dancing, Honduran beers, Honduran politics, Venezuelan politics, love, girlfriends, dating, and the Yankees. When I say "we talked" I mean that he would broach the topic, ask me my opinion, and then tell me his complete history with the topic.
"Hey, what do you think about the Yankees winning again, looks like they are headed to the World Series"
"Yea, I dunno. I´m kind of sick of the Yankees, and I wanted the Angels to win. Really though, I don´t care for the american league, I like the Reds, but they didn´t even post a winning record this year."
"Well, I liked Jeter for a while when I was a little bit younger, but I don´t really know how I feel about Jeter an A-Rod on the same team. When I was a lot younger, the Yankees were pretty good. Well I guess the Yankees have always been good. That is probably because they had some really good players early on...you know like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gerhig. I really liked Lou Gerhig. I mean I liked his statistics, and the kind of person he was. The Yankees have pretty much always been pretty good, and I guess I´m just used to them being in the playoffs..."
I learned a lot. I was actually interested in his political views, mainly because they differed so greatly from those presented at the CCD. Frosty was in favor of the coup, and saw it as a blessing for the country. He was also very very concerned, and made it seem like there were many who shared his opinion that Venezuela under Chavez would try to invade Honduras. Freddy told me later that it was "paranoia of the elite" and that realistically, it would never happen.
It was nice to go out and even though most of the converstaions were in Spanish, I was able to understand most of what was going on. That being said, I´m not sure I´ll sit next to Frosty next time. It was kind of a long night.
