Yesterday, as soon as I got to work, Elmer asked me to help him to move some tables around for our guests from the Council. As soon as we got done setting up the tables, he told me to hop in the van so that we could go for ride. We went around to his son´s high school and then to a local market. It was nice of him to show me around.
I worked on my translation and the prayer for Global Ministries during the rest of the morning when we got back. Lunch was spent down at the kitchen at the Seminary, and my co workers were full of questions about the inner workings of Global Ministries. I think that it is largely due to Felix´s pending visit this weekend.
Over the course of the last month, I have been very fortunate to get to know te people who work here at te CCD fairly well. Especially with the situation over the last couple of weeks, and the arrival of the Council of Latin American Churches, I have been able to spend more time talking about important issues with my coworkers.
Heidy - Heidy is kind of shy, but has a lot to tell you when you get her to open up a little bit. She is 25, has two kids, and has sacrificed a lot in her life for her children. She talks with me some in the office, and can help to translate what I really mean sometims to Cristian or some of the other employees here.
Cristian - Cristian is very nice, and always wants to know my opinion on things. She looks out for me when Elmer, or some of the other guys try and get me to say things that would be funny for them. She works very hard to give me extra vocabulary for the office, and for every day conversation.
Patty - Patty is incredibly helpful and patient. She works with me a lot on my Spanish, and is very understanding of my errors. She translates sometimes for me, and for the other people in the office. She is very fun and loves Honduran futbol.
Marisela - Marisela is very caring. She is constantly fretting about everyone´s well being, and trying to arrange everything perfectly so that others can be the most comfortable. She always runs a little bit late to everything, but it is because she is always double checking to make sure she has finished her work as best as she can.
Edgardo - Edgardo is a fun guy, who stands up for what he believes in. He loves joking around, but knows when to be serious, and is very smart. He listens well, and knows when to speak and when to stay quiet.
Betzabe - Betzabe is one of the most intelligent and passionate people I have ever met. She works very hard to keep on top of her education and is constantly trying to learn more and see the world from different poins of view. She likes to make fun of Edgardo and his cheesy jokes, but is a good and loyal friend.
Elmer - Elmer is kind of a dirty old man. He jokes around all of the time and is always laughing and trying to put smiles on everyone´s faces. He is humble, and takes solace in the simple things that bring him joy. He is a kid in a man´s body, and I have rarely seen anyone as happy as Elmer was feeding the fish in Tallanga.
Nancy - Nancy is a bit of a firecracker. She is very honest and upfront with people, but she is well liked and respected for it. She doesn´t beat around the bush and is very genuine. She is a very hard worker, but takes time out of her day to help me with the word of the day.
Freddy (The one who was on vacation the first week) - Freddy is a jack of all trades. He is frequently running around getting things, fixing things, or doing office work. He has a very admirable work ethic, and is very opionated and upset about the human rights violations that have taken place here.
Freddy M. (the boss) - Freddy is very good at finding the balance. He finds balance in his work and social life. He finds balance between both sides of the political conflict. He finds balance between opinions in the office. He is always kind to invite me to hang out with his friends and his church.
Luis Felipe - Luis likes to help people. He is a very good professor at the Seminary, and is very passionate about teaching and ensuring that the students really walk away changed. He likes to laugh, and is very curious about America.
Hector - Hector is a little shy at first, but is very helpful around the office. He serves as an errand boy, but is constantly helping the secretaries and others with their work.
Noemy - Noemy is a little scary. She believes very strongly that what she is doing is right. She tries desperately to surround herself with like minded people, and truly strives for what she believes will provide the most help for Honduras.
Everyone has spent my first month here bending over backwards to try and make things even just the slightest bit easier for me, and I couldn´t be more grateful to be working with these children of God. I am blessed to have them in my life, and I hope that one day, they may feel blessed to have me in theirs.
