My brother comes for a visit tomorrow, and I highly doubt I will continue posting over the Christmas vacation. I guess we will have to wait and see, but there is a possibility that this will be my last post for 2009.
Tuesday November 8th
Tuesday nothing worth writing about happened. Work was normal. The drive home was normal. The evening was spent relaxing. I elected not to waste an entire post yesterday just to write out those three sentences.
Wednesday November 9th
Yesterday Freddy let me borrow La Batalla (the car) and get some practice driving it. I am allowed to borrow it for the week that Bobo visits, and I was glad that Freddy let me use it for some practice. For practice, Freddy and I left in the morning to go laptop shopping.
As my work history in the United States is split between the food industry and churches, I haven´t had much experience with some of the office practices. From my limited experience with company purchases in the US, the standard has been to shop around, find the best product for the most reasonable price, purchase it, and be sure to include the reciept.
In Honduras, you must travel to at least three different stores and have them print out estimates for how much product would cost. After bringing the three or more different reports back to the office, discussion ensues, and then after a debate, funds are allocated and the product can be purchased the next day.
Before lunch yesterday, Freddy and I drove around town to three different laptop stores and got quotes from each of them. We returned to the office and the funds were approved for a Toshiba Laptop for the CCD, which I will be able to use while I am here. Hopefully this means that we will be able to get the laptop today. Knowing life and culture in Honduras however, I am not holding my breath.
We got back to the office for lunch, and enjoyed discussing different gift ideas for our secret friends. After lunch, we had our English class. For not having grades, tests or quizzes that matter, or really any benefit other than learning, these students are really studying and practicing! It makes teaching easy.
I drove everyone back to Plaza after work, and thoroughly enjoyed the traffic and general havoc that is driving in Tegucigalpa. When I had returned home safely, I did some laundry and got a few things ready for Bobo´s visit. I watched some TV and read a little bit before heading to bed.
Just in case I don´t post again in 2009...it has been quite a year.

ReplyDeleteAlan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me about your blog url. Reading over your entries makes me feel a little bit better about not chatting with you at retreat... a little, but not a lot. Still looking forward to the day we'll sit down over coffee and get caught up. Now when't the next flight to Honduras... hmmm!
