Freddy had to go to the Bay Islands yesterday to do some work with a property that the CCD owns up there. The Bay Islands are these beautiful tourist islands just north of the country in the Carribbean Sea. They are so touristy (How touristy are they?) They are so touristy, that the majority of the people who live there speak English and don´t even know Spanish.
At any rate, with Freddy´s absense, I had to ride to work with Marisela. This, I should have known, took longer than expected. I was told to be ready at 8:00, and at 8:10, I got a phone call saying that it would probably be closer to 9:00. I read a little bit of the God Delusion while I waited to be picked up, and also in the car to the office.
Throughout the day, our gatekeeper kept on poking his head in to check on us. He is new, and I wondered if he was trying to wander around to know us better, or because he thought that was part of his job, or what. The work day passed fairly quickly, which was helped by showing up about an hour and a half late. I helped translate a few request forms, and worked on preparing things for the group we are supposed to have next Friday.
Elmer had also gone with Freddy, so those of us at the office were left without a car to drive people home in. Fortunately, we had someone visiting the office who was able to give us a ride to Plaza. On our way out, the gatekeeper told us to keep an eye out for a blue car. Apparently, throughout the day, a blue car with a couple of rather questionable figures inside would park outside of the office for an hour at a time. This explained his vigilance over us during our working hours.
Our office has been broken into a few times at night, and various computers, or expensive looking pieces of technology have been stolen, so I wondered if that was perhaps on the minds of the shady figures in the blue car.
I made some dinner for myself when I got back home and spent the evening reading and watching TV, while pondering what the men in the blue car could have wanted.
This morning, I also rode to work with Marisela, although (somewhat) more on time today. On our way there, she got a phone call, and when the other person started talking, she immediately gasped. "Uh oh," I thought, "Shady blue car dudes."
"At the office, are you sure?" she frantically asked into the phone. "Ok, thank you," she replied with a disheartened look on her face.
"This morning at the office, Alan -" she began as I braced for the worst, "- everyone forgot their keys. They have been waiting outside and wanted to know if we were coming soon so I could let them in."
I really need to remember that Honduran people gasp at seemingly inopportune times.
