That is right, yesterday afternoon, Freddy and I finally went to the store and picked up the new laptop. I am currently typing on a nice new Dell that has Windows 7. I've yet to really explore much of it, because I spent most of yesterday night and some of this morning installing various drivers and anti virus software stuff.
The keyboard is a Spanish keyboard, which is different than an English one in a number of ways. A lot of the symbols are switched around, for example the & and the / also the ? and the - I'm not really sure why. The only one that is really killing me is the shift key is split in half, with the half closest to the rest of the keyboard as making this sign:\ This happens to be the part of the shift key that I use most frequently. \so if this post is riddled with capitalization errors, please forgive me.
Yesterday was a really good "me" day. I felt a lot of love and support from comments, emails, messages, any way that people could communicate with me to let me know that I am in their hearts and prayers. I am so blessed.
After work, I started working on setting up my computer, but decided around 7:00 to head up to Plaza to go see a movie. The only one playing at the time was Zombieland, and I hadn't seen it yet, so I decided to watch it. For those of you who haven't accompanied me to a movie theater, it is not uncommon for me to laugh very loudly at some parts that might not be so funny to everyone else. This happened again while watching Zombieland. Not because the parts of the movie were particularly hilarious, but because the Spanish translation at the bottom was so horrendously misleading as to what the characters were trying to say, that I couldn't help but laugh very loudly. The scene was kind of funny anyway, but only in English. I felt very obnoxious.
I came back and tinkered with my computer for a while before reading some of Catch-22 and heading to bed.
This morning, I was up early, and with a phone call from Luis Felipe, I was reminded that I did not have to go into the Seminary this morning, because my class wasn't going to be starting until next week. I was already up, so I decided to head up to the roof and get some exercise in. There had been some work done on the work out facilities (three machines) and a TV was added to the area. I hopped on the bike, turned on the TV, and watched most of the second half of Pocahontas in Spanish. The songs were still in English, and I was glad that no other tennants came up to the roof to the sight of me bicycling while singing "Savages, Savages, barely even human..."
After a shower, I began making a list of things that I needed to get done today in preparation for tomorrow. Thats right. Superbowl Sunday. I am throwing a small party for my office friends, and want to do it the right way. So far, I have:
Pigs in a Blanket
Chicken Wings
Chicken Fingers
Skyline Chili Dip
Nachos
Salsa
Chips
Chex Mix
M&Ms both regular and peanut
Cheese
Crackers
Pretzels
Vegetables and Dip
Doritos
and a Football Shaped Cake
Now in our household, I'm pretty sure the cake years were only for when Dallas was in the Superbowl, but this may be one of the few times these Honduras get the chance to eat a football cake, so I decided to go for it.
So it appears as though the rest of my day will be spent trying to get things ready for this epic Superbowl Party. It turns out that most of my co workers are torn on who to root for also. Normally, they don't watch, but if they do, they root for the team from the city that they have heard of. This year, they have heard of New Orleans because of Katrina, and Indianapolis because that is where Global Ministries is headquartered. It should be a good game.
Am I missing anything that is a neccessity for Superbowl parties?

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you finally got your laptop and I also hope you have a lot of fun tomorrow.
Oh, I've also gotten a lot of compliments on my facebook profile pic. Everyone seems to like it better this way so maybe I should just keep it...
haha, my family normally has a very unique super bowl meal (we eat goulash and bread), so idk what's really traditional.
ReplyDeletegood luck with your prep for the party. have fun :)
Hi Alan,
ReplyDeleteThis is uncle Mitch Reading about your new computer keyboard made me think about our time in El San Juan Puerto Rico. We spent a few days there after a cruise. The taxi drivers were on strike and we had to hire the bellmans' nephew to drive us out and about. Where did we go? Why the "Mall of Americas" of course. Yeah, I know we thought we were being safe. The driver took off at somewhere between 90 and 120 miles an hour.
I peeled your Aunt Kris off the ceiling of his 1972 cutlass while we prayed out loud. When we arrived at the mall, where did we eat? Why CHI CHIs. We had to ask for an english menu and point at our meal choice ( I hoped it was chicken!)
As we walked around the mall,it felt like we were part of some weird twighlight zone episode. All the words were misspelled and we had no clue what anything cost.
We had the same guy drive us back to our 400 year old hotel (air freshener anyone?)
And hired him to drive us to the airport the next day!
That was just 2 days of time in a foreign place for us. We have learned to appreciate the world since then!
I guess what I'm trying to say is we are proud of you and know that everyday brings a new challenge and opportunity for you. We hope the people of Honduras appreciate the time they have with you. We enjoy reading your blog and will try to be better at responding back.
Enjoy your superbowl party- one thing we have done is create football squares, have the guests choose squares and have small prizes for the winners per quarter. This adds a little excitement to the game!
Oh by the way we have over 13 inches of snow in Springfield!!
We love you
AKris & U Mitch

ReplyDeletewell I emailed the family because I photoshopped 2 albums of Memaw and Grandads photo albums. Your bethany email came back saying it couldn't be sent.do you have a differnt email? if not i probably misspelled it. But if you want to check out the photos go to google sign in as pksmithfamily@gmail.com: password: charades.
ReplyDeleteOn the top bar choose the word more--> than photos and it will take you to picasa. It's pretty neat to look at all of the pictures of them when they were young.
It looks like you have everything for your party! have fun!
